WA Sec. State’s Privacy Defense is “Total Nonsense,” Says DOJ

Bellevue— Earlier this month, the Department of Justice sued Washington State Secretary of State Steve Hobbs for refusing to turn over voter data rolls. Hobbs claims he is protecting voters’ privacy—but his defense falls flat.

“I’m in litigation with 18 states in 19 different lawsuits over their refusal to comply. I’m asking for stuff like the last four [digits] of someone’s social, said US Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon on a podcast earlier today. “Whether someone is in the country legally or not, or whether they are a citizen or not is obviously a matter of federal record. The concept that that’s a ‘privacy’ issues is total nonsense.”

“Dhillon’s recent remarks are valid and true,” says WAGOP Chairman Jim Walsh. “They might as well be aimed directly at ‘nonsense” arguments made by Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson, Attorney General Nick Brown, Secretary of State Steve Hobbs and various left-wing bureaucrats in state government that illegal aliens have ‘privacy’ rights which must be protected at the risk of diluting the legal votes of Washington citizens. Such dilution is unconstitutional and a violation of legal voters’ civil rights.”

“The nonsense arguments made by Ferguson, Brown, Hobbs & Co. are excuses for defying lawful orders from the U.S. Department of Justice to share Washington voter data for federal review and audit. Why are Ferguson, Brown, Hobbs & Co. defying lawful orders? Because they don’t want an audit of Washington’s voter data to show how poorly that information has been maintained. How many voters are illegally registered in this state? Hobbs has already admitted that thousands of Washington voters ARE illegally registered. The only question is: How many thousands? Tens of thousands? Or hundreds of thousands?

“Dhillon may have to increase her pressure on Ferguson, Brown, and Hobbs to assure that federal law is followed and the constitutional rights of legal Washington voters are not being illegally diluted. As Dhillon turns up that pressure, Ferguson, Brown, and Hobbs may start pointing fingers of blame at one another—because they’re not used to being held accountable for their shoddy actions. They’ve had a long run of ducking accountability and using poorly maintained voter data to their advantage. With the Feds looking hard into our state’s sloppy voter data practices, those days may finally be coming to an end.”

Voters can expect cleaner voter rolls in 2026, says Dhillon. “You are going to see hundreds of thousands of people removed from voter rolls. We expect to win these cases, but it may take us going to the US Supreme Court.”
